We traveled north this month, to Santa Fe Station, the only poker room in the northwest and a popular one at the time! Wally Womer is a poker room manager and has been in Santa Fe for the last three years. The casino has 14 poker tables, and from my previous observations, it is usually very active with players who are often on the waiting list to join the game.
Womer is 60 years old and has been married to his wife, Gail, for the past 38 years. They have a son, a daughter and one grandson.
GT: How did you get into poker?
WW: “I have been involved in poker my whole life visiting poker88. My grandmother taught me how to play poker when I was eight years old. He beat me, kept my money and it took me years to get it back from him! (Lol.) When I finally grew up, I started dealing in Tropicana in 1978. Then I moved back to Philly (hometown) and sold insurance for 15 years. When I was there, I played poker for 10 years, and then I moved back to Las Vegas in 2004. I have worked with Station Casinos for the last 13 years. “
GT: Tell me about your room in Santa Fe. How many tables, games you spread, tournaments, facilities etc.
WW: “We have 14 tables in Santa Fe, and all of them come with USB chargers. We have two $ 50 tournaments every day at noon and 7pm, and on Fridays and Saturdays the last tournament is 6pm. On the last Friday of the month we have a big tournament we’ve been running – it’s a $ 100 tournament and this month we’re running it with $ 200.
“We spread a wide variety of good games on limits 2-4, 3-6 limits, 3-6 Omaha hi / low and 1-2 unlimited with purchases from $ 100- $ 500.”
GT: What makes your room popular or unique to players? What’s their favorite game?
WW: “I believe with all my heart that we have the friendliest staff and dealers in Las Vegas. Most of our business is our local market and we know almost all of our players by first name. As I said before, I have been involved in poker my whole life, so I want my guests to feel like they are sitting in someone’s house inviting them to play poker and have fun! “
GT: Are there any special events, tournaments or promotions coming up?
WW: “We have a special promotion for guests in Santa Fe. For example, we have a great promotion to kick off our game Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning from 6am to noon, which starts at $ 50 and is awarded hourly until it hits. We have a raffle every Wednesday at 6:15 pm which now has a prize pool of $ 5,300, and every 10 minutes the game gives you a virtual ticket. Since we are part of Casino Station, we fall into the jackpot bad beat, and with our famous “Quad Flopper” progressive you can win thousands, just by dropping certain quads. “
GT: What are your interests, hobbies, family life like outside the poker room?
WW: “I spend most of my free time with my wife and family, going to the park or watching movies with them is what I love.”
